Jason Aldean Returns to CMT Music Awards Amid Controversy

Despite facing backlash last summer for his song “Try That in a Small Town,” Jason Aldean is slated to take the stage at the upcoming CMT Music Awards. This performance marks Aldean’s ninth appearance at the ceremony, where he will present “Let Your Boys Be Country,” a track nominated for Video of the Year. The awards show will also feature performances by artists like Jelly Roll, Keith Urban, Kelsea Ballerini, and Lainey Wilson.

The controversy surrounding Aldean began when critics interpreted “Try That in a Small Town” as critiquing the Black Lives Matter movement. The video’s imagery, which included a Molotov cocktail, a burning flag, and clashes between police and civilians, along with lyrics suggesting a threat of violence, sparked a heated online debate. CMT pulled the video shortly after its release due to the backlash.

Aldean has since defended the song, stating that it does not contain any racial connotations and condemning the dangers of “cancel culture.” As Aldean steps back into the spotlight at the CMT Music Awards, hosted by Kelsea Ballerini, on April 7, the industry and fans alike will be watching closely. The event promises to be a significant moment for country music, as it navigates the complexities of artistic expression and social commentary.
