Jamie Lee Curtis has pledged to cease her criticisms of Marvel Studios. The Oscar-winning actress recently sparked a social media frenzy following a Comic-Con interview with MTV, where she was asked to identify the current phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her candid response: “Bad.”
In a subsequent statement on social media, Curtis expressed regret for her comments. “My remarks about Marvel were ill-considered, and I promise to do better,” she wrote. “I have reached out to Kevin Feige and will no longer participate in the online mudslinging or engage in promotional antics designed for clicks over content.”
Although Curtis acknowledged that publicly criticizing Marvel was inappropriate, she implied that her assessment of the MCU had some merit. Despite Marvel’s recent success with “Deadpool & Wolverine,” expected to surpass $1 billion globally, 2023 marked a challenging year with two significant box office failures: “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels.” The latter became Marvel’s lowest-grossing film in history, earning only $84 million domestically.
Curtis’s rivalry with Marvel isn’t new. Throughout 2023, she compared her multiverse film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” favorably against Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” often declaring her film the superior multiverse narrative.
“I hold no animosity towards Marvel,” Curtis clarified in an interview with People magazine. “I’ve watched many Marvel movies. My point was that ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ was a small film that made a big impact. We told a multiverse story that resonated deeply with audiences. My intention was to highlight that a film doesn’t have to be a Marvel production to be spectacular and moving.”
Curtis attended Comic-Con to promote the upcoming video game adaptation “Borderlands,” set to hit theaters on August 9.
