James Hetfield Immortalizes Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister with a Tattoo Mixed with Ashes

James Hetfield of Metallica has paid a unique tribute to his friend and musical inspiration, Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, by getting a tattoo that’s literally mixed with a piece of the late rock legend. Hetfield chose the iconic ace of spades symbol, an homage to Motörhead’s famous track “Ace Of Spades,” for his new ink, which includes Kilmister’s ashes.

The tattoo, etched onto Hetfield’s middle finger by tattoo artist Corey Miller, symbolizes more than just a tribute. As Hetfield explained on Metallica’s Instagram, “A salute to my friend and inspiration Mr. Lemmy Kilmister. Without him, there would be NO Metallica. Black ink mixed with a pinch of his cremation ashes that were so graciously given to me. So now, he is still able to fly the bird at the world.”

This poignant gesture reflects the deep bond between Hetfield and Kilmister, who not only influenced Metallica’s sound but also became a personal friend after they rose to fame. The tribute doesn’t end with the tattoo. This Friday, Lemmy’s ashes will be enshrined at the Rainbow Bar & Grill in West Hollywood, a favorite spot of Kilmister’s. The ceremony will coincide with the launch of Motörhead Whiskey and plans for a statue in Kilmister’s hometown of Burslem, UK, are also underway, ensuring his legacy continues to rock on.
