On January 15, National Booch Day is celebrated in the U.S. to pay tribute to the delightful fermented fizzy kombucha tea that has existed on this planet for centuries.
Also known as the National Kombucha Day, the holiday aims to provide “booch” fans with an opportunity to simply unwind and sip on their favorite tea, in whichever flavor floats your boat. If you haven’t tried kombucha tea before, now is the time to give it a try.
History of Kombucha, and Booch Day
Kombucha, often referred to as “booch,” has a history that dates back centuries. Originating in Northeast China around 220 B.C., this fermented tea gained popularity for its potential health benefits. It’s said that the tea was revered for its energizing and detoxifying properties, making it a cherished elixir.
Today, the art of brewing Kombucha has evolved with a blend of tradition and innovation. The process typically involves fermenting sweetened tea with a “symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast,” or SCOBY. The SCOBY, resembling a rubbery pancake, plays a crucial role in transforming the tea into a tangy, effervescent beverage.
Once Kombucha reached the U.S., it became a household name. That’s when the beverage brand KeVita saw it as a perfect business opportunity, and decided to launch their own brand of Kombucha tea. In what should be a surprise to no one, Kevita also founded National Booch Day on January 15, 2019.
Health Benefits of Kombucha
Kombucha’s popularity has skyrocketed in recent years, and it’s not just a fleeting trend. The beverage is touted for its potential health benefits, including probiotics that support gut health, antioxidants that combat oxidative stress, and various vitamins and organic acids.
Additionally, its low sugar content compared to traditional sodas and its natural effervescence make it an attractive alternative for health-conscious consumers. And for those doing Dry January, booch makes a great mocktail on ice.
