After more than four decades behind the drum kit for Iron Maiden, legendary percussionist Nicko McBrain has announced his retirement from touring. The announcement, made on December 7, followed McBrain’s final performance with the band at Allianz Parque in São Paulo, Brazil, during the conclusion of their Future Past Tour.
Nicko McBrain Bids Farewell to Touring
McBrain, 72, shared his heartfelt decision in a statement:
“It is with both sorrow and joy that I announce my decision to take a step back from the grind of the extensive touring lifestyle. I wish the band much success moving forward.”
Joining Iron Maiden in 1982, McBrain replaced Clive Burr, contributing his unparalleled drumming to the band’s rise as one of heavy metal’s most iconic acts. Despite retiring from touring, McBrain confirmed he will remain involved with Iron Maiden, working on various projects while focusing on personal endeavors.
He concluded his statement with the band’s signature rallying cry:
“Up the Irons!”
Simon Dawson Joins the Legacy
Iron Maiden announced on December 8 that Simon Dawson, a seasoned session drummer and long-time collaborator with Maiden co-founder Steve Harris, will step in as the band’s new drummer.
Dawson, a native of Suffolk, England, has been a key part of Harris’s British Lion project since 2012, recording on both albums and touring extensively. His familiarity with Harris and his work on The Burning have made him a natural choice to carry McBrain’s legacy forward.
The band’s statement expressed excitement about Dawson’s addition:
“Simon is a name familiar to many of our fans… and we’re delighted to welcome him as we prepare for the next chapter of Iron Maiden’s journey.”
The Run For Your Lives Tour: Celebrating 50 Years
Iron Maiden is gearing up for their Run For Your Lives Tour in 2025, commemorating 50 years of the band’s legacy. The tour kicks off on May 27 in Budapest, Hungary, with 32 dates across Europe currently scheduled. This milestone tour promises to celebrate the band’s remarkable history while ushering in a new era with Dawson behind the kit.
Nicko’s Legacy and the Band’s Future
McBrain’s influence on Iron Maiden cannot be overstated. Joining in 1982, he helped define the band’s sound through classic albums like Piece of Mind, Powerslave, and Somewhere in Time.
As Iron Maiden enters their 50th year, fans can look forward to the next chapter of the band’s storied career. With Simon Dawson joining the fold and McBrain’s ongoing contributions behind the scenes, the future of Iron Maiden looks bright.
