Inside the Jets’ Ambitious Quest for a New General Manager

The New York Jets continued their exhaustive search for a new general manager on Tuesday, interviewing two seasoned NFL executives: Green Bay Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan and Miami Dolphins assistant GM Brian Gaine.

These meetings bring the number of GM candidates interviewed to 15, as the Jets seek a replacement for Joe Douglas, who was dismissed in November. The team has cast a wide net, targeting a mix of veteran leaders and emerging talents across the league.

Profiles of Sullivan and Gaine

Jon-Eric Sullivan has been with the Green Bay Packers organization for 21 years, steadily rising through the ranks. Starting as a college scout, Sullivan was promoted to vice president of player personnel in 2022. His tenure in Green Bay has been marked by consistent success in player evaluation and development. Sullivan has also been in high demand, recently interviewing for the Tennessee Titans GM position and being approached by the Las Vegas Raiders. Football runs in Sullivan’s family—his father, Jerry Sullivan, was a longtime NFL and college assistant coach before retiring in 2021.

Brian Gaine brings significant GM experience, having served as the Houston Texans general manager in 2018. Currently Buffalo’s assistant GM, Gaine’s NFL journey began as a scout with the Jets from 1999 to 2005. His career includes leadership roles with the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, and Buffalo Bills, where he has excelled in roster building and player acquisitions.

An Ambitious Search

The Jets’ GM search has attracted some notable names:

  • Former Atlanta Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff
  • Philadelphia Eagles assistant GM Alec Halaby
  • Kansas City Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi
  • ESPN analyst Louis Riddick
  • Detroit Lions executive Chris Spielman

The team is also interviewing candidates for their head coaching vacancy, with nine individuals already in consideration.

A New Era for the Jets?

This search marks a pivotal moment for the Jets, who are looking to reshape the franchise under new leadership. With the interviews spanning a diverse range of expertise, the Jets are leaving no stone unturned to find the ideal combination of vision, experience, and strategy.

Both Sullivan and Gaine have proven track records that align with the Jets’ goals of building a competitive and sustainable roster. Their interviews reflect the organization’s commitment to assembling a strong front office capable of delivering long-term success.

As the search continues, Jets fans remain eager for announcements that could define the team’s trajectory in the seasons ahead.
