In a very surprising move, Ian Desmond has signed with the Texas Rangers for one year. It’ll cost the Rangers a first round pick and $8 million, but it’ll be worth it for a team looking for outfield help. You heard us right. Desmond, the former Nationals’ shortstop, will almost certainly be playing outfield for Texas.
What makes this odd very surprising is that the Nationals had offered Desmond the qualifying offer of $15.8 million, but he turned it down. He’s taking a major pay cut by taking this offer with the Rangers, so he must really not be happy with the Nationals and their front office.
Ian Desmond only hit .233 with 19 home runs and 62 RBI during the 2015 season.
