How Android XR will bring Gemini to glasses and headsets

At their 2025 I/O, Google has announced brand-new developments in Android XR, introducing AI-powered smart glasses created with brands such as Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.

As Bizz Buzz reports – fueled by Gemini AI – help without hands by presenting the user’s perspective to the system, which makes instant translation, navigation, and texting easy. Because they are designed for all-day usage, the glasses fit easily with Android phones, allowing you to use them naturally.

According to Google, “These glasses, equipped with a camera, microphones, and speakers, work in tandem with your phone, giving you access to your apps without ever having to reach in your pocket. And an optional in-lens display privately provides helpful information right when you need it. Pairing these glasses with Gemini means they see and hear what you do, so they understand your context, remember what’s important to you, and can help you throughout your day.”

“When we introduced Android XR alongside Samsung and Qualcomm, we shared how headsets, like Samsung’s Project Moohan (coming later this year!), will offer immersive experiences on an infinite screen. Gemini makes Android XR headsets easier to use and more powerful by understanding what you’re seeing and taking actions on your behalf.”

The Google I/O sneak peek showed how Android XR glasses will work in real-world scenarios, including messaging friends, making appointments, asking for turn-by-turn directions, taking photos and more. They even demoed live language translation between two people, showing the potential for these glasses to break down language barriers — giving you subtitles for the real world.

Google is also partnering with innovative eyewear brands, starting with Gentle Monster, Warby Parker and the latest collab with Kering Eyewear, to create stylish glasses with Android XR. As Founder and CEO/President of Kering Eyewear Roberto Vedovotto said via a statement, “Combining Kering’s design with Google’s technology, the eyewear will feature personalized, AI-driven functions for users to engage with their environment in new and meaningful ways. Together, we are shaping a product that people will want to wear: a pair of masterfully designed, high-quality, stylish glasses that unlock the potential of artificial intelligence, while redefining the way of interacting with both the real and virtual worlds.”

As part of this work, Google is advancing their partnership with Samsung to go beyond headsets and extend Android XR to glasses, creating a software and reference hardware platform that will enable the ecosystem to make great glasses. Developers will be able to start building for this platform later this year.

Google is also trying to get a jump on privacy concerns. “To help make sure we’re building a truly assistive product that respects privacy for you and those around you, we’ve begun gathering feedback on our prototypes with trusted testers. We’ll share more on our progress in the coming months, and you can stay tuned for updates on device availability by joining our newsletter.”
