Home Interior Design is Going Green

In recent years, there has been a surge in the popularity of eco-conscious interior design trends, driven by a growing awareness of environmental issues and a desire for sustainable and health-focused living environments. These emerging design directions prioritize the utilization of renewable materials, the integration of energy-efficient concepts, and the adoption of environmentally responsible practices.

But in 2024, it’s even more than that, as new Interior Design concepts go green, literally bringing the outdoors…in. Here are some of the trends to watch – and adopt – this year.

Sustainability

Joshua Smith of Joshua Smith Inc. says there will be a continued drive for substantiality in the coming year. “I’m expecting to see an even greater push towards new zero impact furniture in 2024. We need to ask our vendors the tough questions and educate our clients and audiences on this front, too.”

Adopting sustainable design includes things like:

  • Selecting LED or CFL lighting options, known for their reduced energy consumption and extended lifespan.
  • Enhancing energy conservation by incorporating dimmer switches or motion sensors.
  • Opting for Energy-Efficient Appliances and Equipment, such as those bearing the ENERGY STAR label. These appliances use less electricity and water, effectively diminishing your ecological impact.
  • Employing energy-efficient architectural and design principles to not only lower your carbon footprint but also trim down your energy expenses. Strategies may encompass harnessing natural light, adopting energy-efficient appliances, and implementing insulation to minimize heat dissipation.
  • Integration of cutting-edge smart home devices and systems, such as smart thermostats and lighting controls, to create a more intelligent and eco-friendly living environment. These technologies empower homeowners to optimize energy usage and reduce waste while enjoying enhanced convenience and comfort.

Minimalist Design

Minimalist design is a philosophy that not only champions the reduction of waste but also fosters a serene and clutter-free living environment. It’s a conscious choice that encourages us to simplify our surroundings and focus on what truly matters. One of the most appealing aspects of minimalist design is the opportunity it presents for upcycling and repurposing old items, thus reducing waste and giving rise to distinctive pieces that add character and charm to your home.

Biophilic Design

“Biophilic design will thrive in 2024,” says Ginger Curtis, founder and CEO of Urbanology Designs. “This trend centers around bringing the outdoors inside, creating spaces that foster a stronger connection with nature. Expect to see more indoor plants, living green walls, natural materials like stone and wood and large windows to maximize natural light and reduce the barrier between the interior and exterior.”

Rooted in Nature

Bringing nature into the home will continue to see a rise, explains Eddie Maestri, principal architect and founder of Maestri Studio. “Muted earthy, nature tones will be big in 2024 as we continue to lean into this concept of biophilic design. Small natural details like geometric and organic detailing in furniture, artisan finishes such as plaster and natural patina on finishes will play into the urge to be rooted in nature.”

Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Spaces

Kelly Jimenez of Hoedemaker Pfeiffer says, “embracing the authentic use of materials is here to stay in 2024. Utilizing materials both interior and exterior that reflect their environment, as well as using large expanses of glazing to connect the two, will always be an exciting line to blur for a seamless look.”

Bringing the Outdoors In

Indoor plants maintain their enduring popularity in interior design and remain a consistent feature in eco-friendly design trends. Beyond simply adding texture to your walls through the use of wall planters or hanging planters, these green companions also actively contribute to fostering a healthier indoor environment by purifying the air. By seamlessly integrating indoor plants into your design scheme, you not only improve air quality but also infuse your space with a natural essence that imparts a serene ambience, all the while enhancing its visual allure.
