Home Improvement Tasks To Do in May – Safety and Security

You’ve been holed up all winter, feeling a little like a bear in hibernation.  Time to emerge, stretch, and explore the outdoors.  But before you do, make sure your home is safe and secure before you roam.

Check safety devices.  According to the U.S. Fire Administration, smoke alarms should be tested at least once a month and replaced every ten years, even if they still appear to be in working order.  And May is a great time to not only test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, but to replace the batteries, again, even if they appear to be fine.  Check the expiration date on your fire extinguisher and replace it if necessary.

According to AAA, last year 80% of American families had a road trip planned for their Summer vacation. This leaves many homes vulnerable to break-ins and robbery. One of the best preventive actions you can take now is upgrading your home security system. Smart security systems allow you to view your home from wherever you are, right from your mobile device. Many will even alert you if there is strange activity.

So, whether you are installing a security system for the first time or wanting to upgrade to a new one, smart security is the way to go.  A good place to start looking is at PCMag.com, where the top rated “Editor’s Choice” smart home security systems for 2019 are: ADT Pulse, Vivint Smart Home, SimpliSafe Home Security System, Life Shield Smart Home Security Kit, and the Abode Home Security Kit.
