Having provided Halloween inspiration for decades, Wednesday Addams is one of those rare characters that’s deserving of that often-overused label ‘iconic’. And now, the new Netflix show, “Wednesday,” dedicated to the Addams Family daughter, is giving everyone a newfound appreciation.
This generation’s Wednesday, played flawlessly by Jenna Ortega, has captivated audiences, and the series quickly surpassed Stranger Things season 4 as Netflix’s most-watched show in its first week of streaming.
But it isn’t just the plot and casting (including Catherine Zeta Jones as Morticia Addams and Gwendoline Christie as the school principal) that has everyone hooked; the costumes, hair and make-up are being endlessly praised and referenced across social media. This isn’t shallow: with a character as famous and much-loved as Wednesday, her aesthetic recreation is almost as important – if not more so – than the script.
So fans should be excited to know that the show’s make-up artist, Tara McDonald, via beauty expert Cat Quinn, has taken to Instagram to share the exact lip products worn by Ortega in the series.
McDonald confirmed that she used MAC’s Lip Pencil in Nightmoth, mixed in with Dr PawPaw’s clear lip balm, to create Wednesday’s moody pout. She would mix the two together in a pot or on the back of her hand, and then dab it on to create the perfect “soft goth lip”.
“The idea was for her to look like she had naturally dark lips,” McDonald said, according to Cosmopolitan. “I didn’t want it to look like she was wearing lipstick.”

McDonald also confirmed that Ortega wore Ilia mascara to get those full, dramatic lashes, which was expertly applied by TV make-up artist Nirvana Jalalvand. The rest of her smoky eye was achieved with a combination of three MAC eyeshadows: first blending Brown Script – a warm brown – across the eyelids; followed by the classic black MAC Carbon underneath her eyes; finishing with smudging shade Glitch in the Matrix – a metallic grey – into the lash line.
Now you, too, can rock the Modern Goth look.
