During their debut performance at Coachella 2025, Green Day delivered a high-energy set that combined their classic hits with pointed political commentary. Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong notably altered lyrics in two of the band’s iconic songs to reflect current events.
In “American Idiot,” Armstrong changed the line “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not a part of a MAGA agenda,” a modification he had previously introduced during a New Year’s Eve performance. The crowd responded with enthusiastic cheers.
Later, in “Jesus of Suburbia,” Armstrong modified the lyric “runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimized” to “runnin’ away from pain like the kids from Palestine, tales from another broken home,” referencing the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. This change elicited a strong reaction from the audience, who applauded the band’s willingness to address global issues through their music.
Green Day’s performance also featured fan interactions, including inviting audience members on stage to sing and play guitar. The band’s blend of musical prowess and social consciousness reaffirmed their reputation as artists unafraid to use their platform for political expression.
