Green Day is switching lanes from punk stages to the big screen with their upcoming road-trip comedy New Years Rev, set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12. Written and directed by Lee Kirk and co-produced by the band, the film follows three young friends who embark on what they believe is their dream of opening for Green Day on New Year’s Eve—only to discover it’s all a prank.
The band describes the movie as a “love letter” to ’90s road-trip classics, complete with Green Day soundtrack favorites, mischief, and a guest-studded cast that includes McKenna Grace, Fred Armisen, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Bobby Lee, and more.
Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong says it draws from the band’s early “van days”—late-night drives, basement shows, and the camaraderie of bandmates-turned-family.
Tickets to the TIFF premiere are already sold out, but the band promises that Toronto is “just the beginning” of the film’s rollout. Whether you’re a Green Day loyalist or a road-trip movie aficionado, New Years Rev promises nostalgic energy, punk spirit, and plenty of laughs.
