Green Bay Packers Part Ways with Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry After Playoffs Run

The Green Bay Packers have announced the departure of Joe Barry as their defensive coordinator, despite a respectable performance that aided the team’s progress to the NFC divisional round of the playoffs. This development follows Head Coach Matt LaFleur’s recent reluctance to comment on Barry’s future with the team.

Barry, who joined the Packers in 2021, could potentially remain with the organization in a different role, as per discussions reported by sources. If he departs, LaFleur will be appointing his third defensive coordinator in six seasons. The decision reflects a shift in Green Bay’s defensive strategy, considering the team’s fluctuating performance under Barry’s guidance.

Despite finishing in the top 10 for the fewest points allowed this season, the Packers’ defense struggled, especially against the run, dropping to 28th in the league. Barry’s future seemed uncertain since the 2022 season, with the defense’s overall ranking falling from ninth to 17th. The critical moment possibly came after a disappointing loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 15.

Moving forward, the Packers are exploring options for Barry’s replacement. Matt LaFleur previously pursued Jim Leonhard, who declined to leave the University of Wisconsin. With a history of investing heavily in defense, as seen in General Manager Brian Gutekunst’s draft picks, the Packers are now positioned to redefine their defensive strategy under new leadership.
