Five La Reina High School students, tenth-graders, Reagan Maguire, Sarah Shaw, Logan Burns, Emily Morge and Kelsey Maguire (Reagan’s cousin), are putting on a free volleyball clinic on Friday, February, 10th for k-8 kids from local schools. The teens originally created Girls Gear Up as ninth-graders and last year the girls collected roughly 300 pieces of donated sports equipment form local programs and brought it to St. Anthony’s School in Oxnard.
Reagan stated that, “The idea is to give younger kids a chance to try new sports by giving them the equipment and opportunities needed, It was fun to see all the kids brighten up with all the new equipment.”
This year they did things differently and on February tenth from 3:30 to 5:30 in the La Reina gym (106 W. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks), the girls will be with their coach and varsity team as they lead practice drills and aim to end the day with a friendly scrimmage.
In order to prepare for the camp, the teens raised money during a Christmas tree lighting event by selling baked goods and handmade jewelry. So far their have been 17 kids that have signed up for the camp, although walk-ins will also be accepted. Water and snacks are going to be provided to attendees who are encouraged to donate canned food to Manna Conejo Valley Food Bank.
