On January 28th at Bradenton’s Camp Honi Hanta in Florida, Girl Scouts from the area learned survival tips via a very unique but effective environment. Michelle Cramer, the leader of Troops 17 and 21 stated, “It’s a fun twist on survival training,” in reference to the zombie apocalypse theme they had created for the girls.
Meanwhile, Sgt. Rebecca Sehorne added that a day dedicated to survival skills is very important for girls to learn. Adding that, “I think it stimulates a discussion with them, A lot of times, we don’t want to talk about it with our kids.” The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office sent out personnel to support the girls learning survival techniques.
The camp even had a contagion that spread throughout the camp as well as a zombie chase.
Isabella Brown, 13, of Lakewood Ranch said that, “It’s great — I learned a lot about surviving in the wild, and what to do if you are injured, and that sort of thing, I’ve been in Girl Scouts since kindergarten. You learn something new every day.” She added that some of the skills she learned include self-defense and how to wrap an injured arm in a tourniquet. While other lessons included navigation, tracking, and first aid.
