Country music mourns the loss of a legend as George Strait paid heartfelt tribute to Johnny Rodriguez, who passed away on May 9 at the age of 73. In a touching Instagram Story posted on May 12, Strait, known as the “King of Country,” reflected on the profound impact Rodriguez had on his career.
“Norma and I are so sad about Johnny’s passing,” Strait wrote. “He was an inspiration to me from the beginning.” Growing up just miles apart in South Texas, both artists shared a heritage steeped in traditional country sounds mixed with Latin influences. Rodriguez’s success in the 1970s and ‘80s, blending Tejano flair with country music, paved the way for countless artists, Strait included.
Rodriguez’s classics like “Pass Me By (If You’re Only Passing Through)” and “Love Put a Song in My Heart” brought a fresh sound to country radio and opened doors for diverse voices. Strait remembered him as “a great talent” and sent blessings to Rodriguez’s family, friends, and fans, ending simply: “You’ll be missed, amigo.”
As Strait continues his tour alongside Chris Stapleton, fans have noticed his more subdued performances lately, sparking concern — but for now, the focus remains on honoring a trailblazer whose music will live on.
