Though ER may have concluded, the friendship between George Clooney and Julianna Margulies continues strong. During a Television Academy event celebrating the 30th anniversary of ER on September 16, Margulies, 58, revealed that she and Clooney, 63, maintain a special tradition from their days on the show.
“It always had to be Carol and Doug, in the end,” Margulies said, referring to their iconic characters. She then shared that even today, “George and I still sign our personal emails to each other ‘Love, Carol’ or ‘Doug.’”
Margulies portrayed head nurse Carol Hathaway, while Clooney played her love interest, Dr. Doug Ross, in the medical drama that aired from 1994 to 2009. Reflecting on the show’s impact, Margulies said, “I will always be indebted to ER,” crediting the series for launching both her and Clooney’s careers.
The ER reunion event also brought back memories of Clooney’s return to the show after his departure in season 5. Margulies recalled her mother’s excited reaction, saying, “It was the right ending for them because Carol and Doug were destined to be together.”
Clooney, who remains close to many of his ER castmates, described the show as “the job of a lifetime.” His latest film, Wolfs, costarring Brad Pitt, is now in theaters and will stream on Apple TV+ starting September 27. ER is available to stream on Hulu.
