Acoustic guitar is replaced by piano in the studio version of Garth Brooks’ new single “Stronger Than Me.” A more solid arrangement than what was performed during his CMA Awards debut, but is still just as emotional. The song is a personal note from man to woman, singer to wife.
Brooks patiently works his way through this tribute to wife Trisha Yearwood. “Stronger Than Me” should be an easy song for others to take on as their own, something that will ultimately decide where it ends up against his many hit songs. Heavy chords serve early notice that the focus will be relentless, and at no point does Brooks open his eyes to let light into a serious, pointed performance. A few light guitar licks supplement an arrangement that is sure to stand out on country radio, should it get a chance.
While Brooks debuted the song during the 2018 CMA Awards and has talked about its importance in some detail, little is actually known about where the song came from. He didn’t write it and stayed quiet when pressed for details about who did, other than joking it was “two guys who are slobs.” One of those “slobs” had a song on Brooks’ 2014 album Man Against Machine.
