Gareth Edwards Channels His Inner 17-Year-Old for Jurassic World: Rebirth

Gareth Edwards isn’t just directing Jurassic World: Rebirth — he’s chasing the feeling he had as a 17-year-old seeing Jurassic Park for the first time.

The British filmmaker opened up about the surreal experience of helming the latest chapter in the iconic dinosaur franchise, written by Jurassic Park scribe David Koepp and produced by Steven Spielberg himself.

“Each scene felt like its own mini-movie, its own genre,” Edwards told E! News, describing the moment he read the script. “It’s like a love letter to Spielberg’s early work.”

For Edwards, 50, working under Spielberg’s blessing made all the difference. “If anyone else handed me that script, I would’ve thought it was sacrilege,” he admitted. “But when it’s Steven? You feel like, ‘Okay, I’ve got permission to dream.’”

The Godzilla and Rogue One director isn’t shy about how personal this project is. “It’s selfish, really,” he joked. “I’m just trying to recreate how I felt watching Jurassic Park — that awe, that thrill — and give it to today’s audience, especially the kids.”

Jurassic World: Rebirth hits theaters July 2, promising a dino-sized nostalgia trip for new and longtime fans alike.
