Music history fans have plenty to celebrate on May 14, a date packed with memorable moments that helped shape rock, pop and entertainment culture across several decades.
Back in 1956, rock pioneer Buddy Holly received a prescription for contact lenses. Despite trying the new look, Holly stuck with the thick black glasses that would later become one of the most recognizable images in rock history.
That same year, The Platters released their self-titled debut album on Mercury Records, helping establish the group as one of the defining vocal acts of the 1950s with hits that blended pop and rhythm and blues.
In 1959, British star Cliff Richard expanded his career into film when his first movie, “Serious Charge,” premiered. The release marked an early crossover moment for the singer, who would go on to become one of the UK’s most successful entertainers.
The late 1960s delivered two standout moments on this day. In 1968, Paul McCartney and John Lennon appeared on NBC’s “Tonight Show” alongside guest host Joe Garagiola, bringing Beatlemania to late-night television audiences in America. On the same date, The Rascals recorded “People Got to Be Free,” a song that would become one of the era’s defining calls for unity and social change.
Tragedy struck in 1976 when Keith Relf of The Yardbirds died after being electrocuted by an improperly grounded electric guitar. He was just 33 years old.
Rock history added another major chapter in 1982 when The Clash released “Combat Rock,” the album that featured hits like “Should I Stay or Should I Go” and “Rock the Casbah,” helping the band reach a wider mainstream audience.
In 1985, pop superstar Michael Jackson received a humanitarian award from U.S. President Ronald Reagan at the White House, recognizing Jackson’s charitable efforts and global influence.
The music industry also celebrated a milestone in 1988 when Atlantic Records marked its 40th anniversary with a televised cable special honoring the label’s legendary legacy.
Closing out the timeline, rock icons KISS released their album “Revenge” in 1992, continuing the band’s hard rock resurgence during the early 1990s.
