Free SXSW 2026 Concerts Showcase Rising Stars and Local Talent

Each spring, Austin becomes a hub of global music discovery as South by Southwest brings artists, industry leaders, and fans together for one of the largest cultural festivals in the world. The 2026 edition, running March 12 through March 18, will again transform venues, parks, and streets across the city into stages.

While many SXSW concerts require a badge or wristband, several performances remain free to the public. For festival visitors and Austin locals alike, these open events offer a chance to experience the excitement of SXSW without the cost of admission.

One of the most popular free showcases is BMI Presents Howdy Texas. The annual event highlights emerging artists and rising regional performers across multiple days of music. This year’s lineup includes Parker McCollum, Angel White, Calder Allen, and Grace Tyler, offering a strong mix of country, Americana, and Texas rooted songwriting.

Another longstanding SXSW tradition is South By San José, an outdoor festival that has built a reputation as one of the city’s most accessible music gatherings during the week. The event features several days of performances from artists including Sir Woman, The Droptines, and Los Coast, along with food vendors and a relaxed backyard festival atmosphere.

SXSW also opens some of its official stages to the public. The Radio Day Stage at the Downright Austin hotel hosts performances that are broadcast by radio stations, giving fans a chance to see emerging artists perform live while reaching wider audiences through the airwaves.

Nearby, the Global Stage offers nightly concerts spotlighting musicians from around the world, reflecting the international reach of SXSW’s music programming.

For those looking for a large outdoor setting, the Community Concerts at Lady Bird Lake provide one of the festival’s most scenic stages. The shows welcome all ages and feature live music alongside food trucks and local vendors, with the Austin skyline providing a memorable backdrop.

Additional gatherings such as the Congress Avenue Block Party bring festival energy into the heart of downtown, offering free music along with drinks, food, and interactive brand activations.

Together, these open events help ensure that SXSW remains connected to the city that hosts it. Whether discovering a rising Texas songwriter or catching a buzzworthy band on an outdoor stage, free concerts across Austin allow fans to experience the festival’s spirit without a badge.
