Freddy Peralta Shines as Rays Even ALCS With 3-1 Win Over Guardians

The Tampa Bay Rays are back on even ground in the American League Championship Series, thanks to a dominant outing from Freddy Peralta and a costly defensive breakdown by the Cleveland Guardians.

Tampa Bay secured a 3-1 victory Tuesday night at Tropicana Field, leveling the best-of-seven series at 1-1 before the action shifts to Cleveland.

Peralta was the driving force behind the win, keeping Cleveland’s offense quiet through six scoreless innings. The right-hander surrendered just four hits, walked two batters and struck out six, giving the Rays exactly the kind of performance they needed after dropping the series opener.

The game’s decisive moment arrived in the fourth inning, when Cleveland’s normally reliable defense faltered.

With Tampa Bay threatening, Guardians third baseman José Ramírez failed to cover third base on an infield hit by Chandler Simpson, allowing Victor Mesa Jr. to advance an extra base.

Moments later, Ramírez was unable to handle a ground ball from Ben Williamson. The ball slipped past him, allowing Tampa Bay to score its first run and extend the inning.

Liam Hicks quickly made Cleveland pay for the mistake, delivering a two-run single that pushed the Rays ahead 3-0.

All three runs were unearned against Guardians rookie starter Parker Messick, who completed five innings while allowing six hits. Despite keeping Tampa Bay from producing an earned run, Messick was charged with the loss.

For Peralta, the outing represented another important chapter in his resurgence since joining Tampa Bay from the New York Mets during the season.

After struggling to find consistency in New York, the veteran pitcher established himself as a valuable addition to the Rays’ rotation. His performance Tuesday demonstrated why Tampa Bay has come to rely on him in high-pressure situations.

Cleveland finally broke through in the seventh inning when Chase DeLauter delivered an RBI double, cutting the deficit to two runs.

The Guardians threatened to narrow the gap further, but Tampa Bay’s relief pitchers prevented the inning from turning into a larger rally.

Ian Seymour helped contain Cleveland’s offense before Bryan Baker retired the side in order in the ninth inning, securing his fourth postseason save.

The victory was particularly important for the Rays after their 7-3 defeat in Game 1. Instead of heading to Cleveland facing a two-game deficit, Tampa Bay has restored balance to the series.

For the Guardians, the loss was a frustrating reversal after their strong opening performance. Ramírez, whose postseason contributions have played a major role in Cleveland’s success, found himself at the center of the game’s most consequential defensive sequence.

The Guardians will now look to regroup on their home field, where they will host the next three games of the series.

Game 3 is scheduled for Thursday, October 15, at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

With the championship series tied and both teams demonstrating their ability to capitalize on opportunities, the battle for the American League pennant remains wide open.
