Foo Fighters Unveil New Era: Ilan Rubin, Snippets of New Music & Surprise Show Debut

Foo Fighters are stepping into a new chapter. After officially parting ways with Josh Freese earlier in 2025, the band has brought in Ilan Rubin—formerly of Nine Inch Nails—as their new drummer. The change marks a significant milestone for the band still defining its future following the loss of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022.

In early July, they dropped “Today’s Song,” their first new track since the 2023 album But Here We Are. It not only pays tribute to past members—William Goldsmith, Franz Stahl, Josh Freese, and Taylor Hawkins—but also hints that the Foos are regaining momentum.

Then, in September, they played an intimate surprise show at the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, California. That show did more than reintroduce Rubin—it teased a “riff-heavy” direction for upcoming material.

Between the new lineup, the fresh sound, and the hint of bigger projects, Foo Fighters seem to be navigating the balance of honoring their legacy while pushing forward. For fans, the verification that change is underway—rather than merely anticipated—is energizing, and the promise of more new music makes the horizon exciting.
