Foo Fighters Move Forward: Dave Grohl Details Drummer Change and New Era

For nearly a year, Foo Fighters fans have been puzzling over the abrupt departure of drummer Josh Freese. Now, frontman Dave Grohl has finally spoken at length about the lineup change, offering clarity on a decision that has dominated rock headlines.

Freese, a veteran drummer who stepped in after the tragic passing of Taylor Hawkins in 2022, was officially let go from the band in May 2025. At the time, no reason was publicly provided beyond a brief social media announcement. But in a recent interview, Grohl explained that the choice to move on wasn’t spontaneous. During an extended break from touring, the members of Foo Fighters had honest conversations about their next chapter, ultimately deciding together that a different direction was needed behind the drums. Grohl underscored that the decision “didn’t happen overnight,” and that the band reached out personally to Freese to thank him for his contributions before parting ways.

For his part, Freese has acknowledged the decision and moved on professionally, rejoining old collaborators and continuing to play music. Yet in recent statements, he’s admitted to still feeling somewhat baffled about the reasons for his exit, noting the challenge of reconciling public expectations with the band’s internal dynamics.

Stepping into the role is drummer Ilan Rubin, whose resume includes work with Nine Inch Nails and other major acts. Rubin has already played live with the Foo Fighters, and the group shows no signs of slowing down. Their upcoming album Your Favorite Toy — the first to feature Rubin — is slated for an April 2026 release, with new material already teased and tour plans shaping up to support it.

As one of rock’s enduring acts, Foo Fighters have weathered loss and lineup shifts before. With fresh material and a clear vision for the future, they seem poised to continue evolving even as they honor their past.
