Three decades after its groundbreaking debut, Eric Clapton’s iconic MTV Unplugged performance is making a grand return. A 90-minute extended special, Eric Clapton Unplugged…Over 30 Years Later, will premiere in select theaters across the U.S. and UK on January 27 and 28. The special will be available for streaming on Paramount+ starting February 12, 2025.
A Look Back at a Legendary Performance
Clapton originally recorded his hour-long MTV Unplugged session in 1992 at Bray Studios in Windsor, England. The performance redefined his catalog with first-time acoustic arrangements of hits like “Layla” and “Tears in Heaven”. Clapton also paid tribute to blues legends, performing classics such as Bo Diddley’s “Before You Accuse Me” and Bessie Smith’s “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out.”
The new extended edition will feature remastered footage and behind-the-scenes content, including Clapton discussing the inspirations and emotions behind his songs. This exclusive commentary is seamlessly integrated with the performance footage, offering fans an intimate look at the artist’s creative process.
A Historic Achievement
The live album Unplugged, released in August 1992, became the best-selling live album of all time, with over 26 million copies sold worldwide. The performance earned Clapton six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, cementing its place in music history.
New Collaborations and Productions
The 30th-anniversary special is a collaboration between MTV, Surfdog Records, and producer John Logsdon. Key executive producers include Bruce Gillmer, Vanessa Whitewolf, Eric Clapton, Michael Eaton, and Dave Kaplan, with Alicia Portugal and Lisa Lauricella overseeing the series.
