Shōgun may have made Emmys history as the first-ever non-English language series to win for best drama, but on the red carpet, the real winner was an erstwhile festive fashion fave: sequins.
As Hypebae reports, leading the charge, was The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, who wore a custom-made Bottega Veneta gown in eye-catching red, black, white and yellow sequins. The strapless neckline and thigh-high split evoked “Nollywood vibes,” she told red carpet host Laverne Cox.
Other shimmering trends spotted on the Emmys red carpet included metallic dresses – like Christine Baranski’s gold lame gown and Kristen Wiig’s woven sparkler (both by Oscar de la Renta) as well as Gillian Anderson’s textured Emilia Wickstead gown. Catherine O’Hara positively shone in her head-to-toe silver bejeweled dress by Oscar de la Renta, while Dakota Fanning (in Armani Prive) and Jennifer Aniston (also in de la Renta, who was having quite the red carpet night) let the pearls that adorned their gowns do the talking.
Taking a sartorial cue from 1968 classic film Barbarella, talk of the Ton Nicola Coughlan, along with Yellowjackets star Ella Purnell, both dazzled in silver sequins. The Bridgerton star opted for drama via Prabal Gurung, with outsized, off-the-shoulder sleeves and a gorgeous hourglass silhouette, while the Fallout lead plunged into a slinky Rabanne number, which she paired with a dark plum lip.
Candace Bergen, who had one of the most talked about moments of the night when she called out VP candidate JD Vance for his comments about “childless cat ladies” punctuated with one deadpan word, “Meow,” presented the award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series in a dazzling dark gold Dolce & Gabbana number topped off with turquoise earrings.
But sequins weren’t limited to metallic hues as some chose to sparkle in color. 3 Body Problem‘s Eiza González worked a cherry blossom pink sequin gown that highlighted her décolleté. The look, designed by Tamara Ralph, was energized by a feather cape with sleeves The Bear‘s Liza Colón-Zayas, who made one of the most inspiring speeches of the night when she collected her award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, stood out in a floor-length sequined emerald green gown. “To the Latinas who are looking at me? Keep believing,” she said.
Sequins are no strangers to red carpets and stages generally. Loved by old-school style icons like Bianca Jagger, Diana Ross and Cher, the after-dark dressing staple fell our of favor due to their negative environmental impact. 70’s and 80’s versions were typically crafted from petroleum-based plastics, which cannot be breakdown down, recycled or reused, leaving them to pile up in landfill. But sequins are making a comeback, thanks to more sustainable versions in production now.
Hosted by Schitt’s Creek father and son duo Dan Levy and Eugene Levy, the ceremony celebrated TV’s finest, awarding the likes of The Bear, Shōgun, Hacks, True Detective, and Baby Reindeer.
