Disney is heading back to the beach with a fresh take on Aquamarine, giving the beloved fantasy story a new life for television. Disney Channel and Disney+ have officially ordered a pilot for a series inspired by the family favorite, introducing a new generation of viewers to a world where magic and the sea collide.
The new story follows Coral, a teenager who relocates to a picturesque seaside town after her mother’s disappearance. As she begins searching for answers about her family’s past, she uncovers an extraordinary truth. Her mother was a mermaid, and the discovery awakens mysterious powers within Coral just as long-buried secrets begin rising to the surface.
Fans of the original film will also see a familiar face. Emma Roberts is set to return as Claire Brown in a guest appearance while also taking on executive producer duties, bringing a connection between the original movie and its television successor.
Behind the scenes, the creative team also includes several returning names. Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who directed the 2006 film, is back to direct the pilot and executive produce the series. Television writer Sarah Watson is penning the script, while producer Susan Cartsonis is once again helping guide the franchise.
The original Aquamarine developed a lasting fan following after its theatrical release, fueled by its mix of friendship, fantasy, and coming-of-age storytelling. The new adaptation expands that universe with an original story while maintaining ties to the film that introduced audiences to its magical coastal setting.
If the pilot moves forward to a full series, Disney could be giving one of its nostalgic favorites a modern revival designed to appeal to longtime fans and first-time viewers alike.
