Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have decided to bid farewell to the United States, opting for a quieter life in rural England’s picturesque Cotswolds. The couple has reportedly put their sprawling Montecito estate on the market and plan to start anew abroad, citing the election of Donald Trump as a key motivator for their departure.
A Fresh Start
DeGeneres, the former host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, was once a fixture in American entertainment. However, recent years have seen her step away from the limelight following allegations of toxic workplace behavior on her syndicated show, which concluded in 2022. The move to England marks a significant chapter in her post-Hollywood life.
Their Montecito property, purchased in 2019, served as the couple’s primary residence and is now discreetly listed for sale. It’s unclear what will happen to DeGeneres’s other Southern California properties, but it seems she and de Rossi are committed to their English countryside lifestyle.
Life After Ellen
Since stepping away from her show, DeGeneres has kept a low profile in the entertainment industry. Her Netflix stand-up special, Four Your Approval, offered a glimpse into her new life. “I decided to take up gardening. I got chickens,” DeGeneres joked, before addressing her departure from show business with trademark humor:
“Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business … Yeah, the ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind. That was the headline.”
DeGeneres mused on how different expectations might have softened public scrutiny. “Had I ended my show by saying, ‘Go f–k yourselves,’ people would have been pleasantly surprised to find out I’m kind,” she quipped.
Embracing the Quiet Life
Relocating to England appears to align with DeGeneres and de Rossi’s desire for privacy and simplicity. The Cotswolds, known for its idyllic scenery and charming villages, offers a stark contrast to their high-profile life in Montecito. For the pair, the move is not only a physical relocation but a symbolic shedding of their Hollywood past.
While DeGeneres’s days of dominating daytime TV may be over, her wit and humor remain intact as she navigates a new chapter far from the glitz of Los Angeles.
