Edwin Diaz of New York Mets Gets Injured During World Baseball Classic

Edwin Diaz of the New York Mets got injured during the World Baseball Classic. Injuring his knee during Team Puerto Rico’s celebration in the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday.

After the team clinched their spot in the WBC semifinals, the team was celebrating by the mound when Diaz went down and the celebration became somber. Diaz was then carried to the side of the field and placed in a wheelchair before being rolled into the clubhouse. His brother, Alexis, who is also on the team, was in tears on the field.

Diaz was a dominant closer with the Seattle Mariners before being traded to the Mets prior to the 2019 season, with his last season being a forgettable one. His ERA was 5.59 and he lost his job, often giving up the long ball, but has made a turnaround since then. Since the start of the 2020 season, he has had a 2.27 ERA and struck out 257 batters in 150.1 innings. The Mets even re-signed Diaz to a five year, $102 million deal in the offseason.
