Drake had a lot to say about loyalty and betrayal during his appearance at Canadian broadcaster Tyrone Edwards’ Nostalgia Party in Toronto on Saturday night. Addressing the crowd, the “One Dance” rapper warned about the inevitable realization that even those you think are close friends may “switch up” and betray you.
“My real friends, are definitely in the building,” Drake said, according to a video shared on Instagram. He went on to speak about how people you trust can unexpectedly “stab you in the back” and “move funny” with you. “You’ll come to that realization… wherever you’re at in life,” he continued, noting that life can sometimes leave you feeling isolated. After his passionate speech, Drake ended on a powerful note by playing Beyoncé’s empowering anthem “Me, Myself and I”.
Drake’s comments about fake friends come amid his escalating feud with fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar. Their ongoing rivalry has heated up over the past year, with both exchanging sharp diss tracks. Drake allegedly unfollowed NBA stars LeBron James and DeMar DeRozan on Instagram after they attended Lamar’s Juneteenth concert, where DeRozan even joined Lamar on stage during a performance of his diss track “Not Like Us”, which takes aim at Drake.
Drake’s response was bold—playing 50 Cent’s iconic track “Many Men”, known for its defiant lyrics about betrayal and survival: “Many men wish death upon me… I’m tryin’ to be what I’m destined to be.”
The Feud Escalates
The feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar has intensified since March, following Lamar’s feature on “Like That” with Future and Metro Boomin. Tensions rose after Lamar responded to being name-dropped by J. Cole on Drake’s song “First Person Shooter” with a provocative line: “Motherf—k the big three, n—a, it’s just big me.”
Their beef took personal turns, with Lamar accusing Drake of inappropriate behavior with underage girls—a claim Drake denies—and Drake retaliating by questioning Lamar’s relationship with his fiancée Whitney Alford and the paternity of their child.
A War of Words
With both rappers exchanging jabs in their music, the feud has become one of the most talked-about in hip-hop this year. As Drake’s speech at the Nostalgia Party shows, the rapper seems to be addressing not just Kendrick, but the broader theme of loyalty in his life as he navigates his public battles.
For now, fans are left wondering how long this war of words will continue, and whether Drake and Kendrick Lamar can ever put their differences aside.
