The rap rivalry between Kendrick Lamar and Drake just took a political turn. Last week in Toronto, Kendrick’s Grand National Tour with SZA drew a sold-out crowd—and one particularly controversial attendee: Canadian politician Jagmeet Singh.
Singh, the former leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, found himself in hot water when Drake publicly called him out for attending the show. Posting a screenshot of their DMs to Instagram, Drake wrote, “You’re a goof,” after spotting Singh in the crowd during a performance of Lamar’s scathing diss track, “Not Like Us”—in Drake’s own hometown, no less.
Singh quickly issued a social media apology. “I went for SZA, not Kendrick,” he claimed. “I shouldn’t have gone at all. OVO and Drake have lifted up this city and [Canada]. For me it’ll always be Drake over Kendrick.”
Drake’s irritation may be justified—fans at the Toronto show loudly chanted Kendrick’s lyrics, and a viral clip even showed a group rapping “Not Like Us” at local Chinese spot New Ho King, a known Drake favorite.
As the tension builds, Drake is staying active, recently featuring on Smiley’s “2 Mazza” and prepping a video contest with Kai Cenat. But it seems the real drama is unfolding right in his backyard.
