Michael McDonald spent decades wondering what had become of the son he and his teenage girlfriend placed for adoption. Nearly six decades later, an unexpected family connection finally provided an answer.
Michael Goessling, a St. Louis man who was adopted as an infant, learned that his biological father is the Grammy-winning singer whose unmistakable voice helped define some of the Doobie Brothers’ biggest years.
The discovery began through DNA testing. A previously unknown half-brother received results that identified Goessling as a relative, setting in motion a remarkable chain of introductions that eventually connected him with his biological parents.
Goessling first met his biological mother. His introduction to his father came later, and the identity of the man on the other end of the phone was not immediately obvious.
As they talked, Goessling learned that his biological father was a professional musician who would soon be touring through St. Louis. The clues suddenly lined up. He realized he was speaking with Michael McDonald.
That revelation came with an almost cinematic coincidence. Goessling had been listening to the Doobie Brothers since childhood and considered himself a fan, never knowing that one of the band’s most recognizable voices belonged to his biological father.
McDonald and Goessling’s biological mother were only 14 when they became parents. Their baby was placed for adoption, while McDonald eventually followed a musical path that would make him one of the most distinctive singers of his generation.
Goessling, meanwhile, was raised by adoptive parents in St. Louis and has spoken warmly about the childhood and family they gave him. Learning the identity of his biological parents did not change his appreciation for the people who raised him.
For McDonald, discovering that his son had grown up in a loving home answered a question that had followed him for decades. He has given particular credit to Goessling’s adoptive parents for the life they provided him.
The two Michaels have now met face to face and begun building a relationship that neither could have imagined for most of their lives.
The reunion brought McDonald another unexpected addition to his family tree. Goessling has children of his own, meaning McDonald also discovered that he is a grandfather.
For a musician whose voice has been familiar to millions for decades, the story has produced a striking reversal: one longtime fan finally discovered why Michael McDonald’s voice might have sounded just a little more familiar than most.
