Dolly Parton has been laid to rest in Nashville, bringing a quiet and deeply personal close to the life of one of America’s most recognizable entertainers.
The country music legend was buried Friday, Aug. 28, at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum. The private ceremony was attended by immediate family and came three days after Parton’s death at age 80.
Parton was laid to rest beside her husband, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025. The couple spent nearly six decades married while maintaining an unusually private relationship despite Parton’s enormous fame.
Their final resting place now reflects that lifelong connection. A bronze marker bears their names and imagery recalling Parton’s Tennessee roots.
Although the funeral itself remained private, fans are being given an opportunity to remember the singer. Guest books have been made available at the cemetery for visitors wishing to pay their respects.
The burial also places Parton among some of the most important names in country music history. Woodlawn is the resting place of performers including George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Eddy Arnold, Marty Robbins and Porter Wagoner.
Wagoner holds a particularly important place in Parton’s story. He helped introduce her to a national audience before she left their professional partnership to pursue her solo career. That transition ultimately helped inspire “I Will Always Love You,” one of the most enduring songs in her catalog.
Following the funeral, Parton’s great-niece Lainey Parton shared memories of a woman whose influence within her family extended far beyond her celebrity. She remembered her great-aunt as someone who encouraged her ambitions, strengthened her confidence and made younger members of the family feel supported.
Parton died Aug. 25 following a brief battle with cancer. She was 80. The specific form of cancer was not publicly disclosed.
Her death ended a remarkable career that reached far beyond country music. Parton became a songwriter, recording star, actress, entrepreneur and philanthropist while retaining an unmistakable connection to the Tennessee upbringing that shaped both her music and public identity.
That charitable legacy remains part of how her family hopes she will be remembered. Supporters have been encouraged to contribute to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the literacy program that has provided books to children around the world.
For a performer whose career unfolded on some of entertainment’s biggest stages, the final farewell was strikingly different: private, intimate and centered on family.
