“Deadpool” blew up the box office this past weekend, bringing in over $132 million over the three-day stretch, and over $152 million including President’s Day. Both of those numbers blow out previous records and we’re buying into the hype.
“Deadpool’s” $132 million number over the weekend is the most for a rated “R” movie since “The Matrix Reloaded” back in 2003 ($91 million). That number is also the best opening weekend figure for a rated “R” movie ever! It blew away “The Matrix Reloaded” as well as “Fifty Shades of Grey” as “The Hangover Part II” in terms of other previous rated “R” hits over the years.
“Fifty Shades of Grey” was the previous record holder for President’s Day movie releases with $93 million brought in last year. “Deadpool” came in and crushed that number with its $152 million figure produced earlier this week.
This unique superhero movie is raunchy, hilarious, and filled with action, so it’s no surprise that it created the stir that it did.
