On March 22, 2025, Dead & Company paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Phil Lesh, co-founder and bassist of the Grateful Dead, during their residency at the Las Vegas Sphere. The band performed “Box of Rain,” a song closely associated with Lesh, marking the first time they played it since his passing in October 2024.
The performance featured guitarist John Mayer on vocals, accompanied by original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart. Archival photos of Lesh and the band were displayed, enhancing the emotional resonance of the tribute. An uplifting message from Lesh preceded the song, adding depth to the homage.
In a recent interview, Weir reflected on his final conversation with Lesh, highlighting their enduring camaraderie. He shared that Lesh called to congratulate him on the Grateful Dead’s recognition at the Kennedy Center, underscoring their mutual respect.
Dead & Company’s 2025 residency, titled “Dead Forever – Live at Sphere,” features 18 shows from March through May, showcasing the band’s commitment to honoring their roots while embracing new musical explorations.
