David Letterman Throws Vintage Shade as CBS Announces End of Colbert’s ‘Late Show’

David Letterman is reminding the world that retirement hasn’t dulled his signature wit. Following the announcement that CBS will end The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in May 2026, the former host posted a throwback montage of him roasting his own network—with one line standing out: “You can’t spell CBS without BS.”

Letterman, who hosted The Late Show from 1993 to 2015, handed the reins to Colbert nearly a decade ago. Though his clip seemed lighthearted, it didn’t go unnoticed in a week when CBS cited financial strain for its surprise decision—one that arrives just as parent company Paramount awaits federal approval for a controversial sale.

Colbert, who has frequently criticized Donald Trump and current political figures, offered a calm but poignant response. “Some people see this show going away as a sign of something truly dire,” he said on Monday’s episode. “While I am a big fan of me, I don’t necessarily agree.”

The comedy community has rallied around Colbert, with appearances from Jon Stewart, John Oliver, Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Fallon filling the audience in support. But it’s Letterman who may have delivered the most cutting—and classic—farewell jab.
