David Byrne’s Who Is the Sky? Heralds a Bold Return—New Album, Avant-Garde Single, and World Tour Announced

Legendary Talks Heads frontman David Byrne is back with a flourish—announcing his first solo album in seven years, Who Is the Sky?, set to drop on September 5 via Matador Records. Alongside the release comes a sweeping world tour and an electrifying new single.

Teasing the album’s creative edge, Byrne shared the third single, “The Avant Garde,” offering a reflective take on experimental art. He describes the track as “Led Zeppelin meets Dirty Projectors”—a daring fusion of classic rock energy and avant-garde ingenuity. Byrne expresses both reverence for boundary-pushing music and skepticism about its impact, capturing the risky rewards of artistic innovation.

To bring this sonic vision to life, Byrne is assembling a dynamic 13-member ensemble of musicians, singers, and dancers—many from his famed American Utopia tour—who will move throughout immersive performances.

The tour kicks off September 14 in Providence, R.I., before making stops across North America and continuing into Europe and Australasia through early 2026.

With Who Is the Sky?, Byrne proves he’s far from resting on his legacy, choosing instead to challenge conventions and blend theatrical storytelling with musical depth.
