Darkest Hour are preparing another heavy strike with Suffer Divine, the Washington, D.C. band’s 11th studio album, arriving October 30.
The 11-song record follows 2024’s Perpetual | Terminal and finds the veteran metal outfit continuing to build around the collision of melodic death metal, thrash and hardcore aggression that has helped define its sound.
The band has kicked off the album campaign with “Suffer Divine,” releasing the title track as the first taste of the new record. The compact 2-minute-and-33-second song wastes little time getting to the point, pairing the group’s metallic intensity with a message focused on justice and accountability.
Frontman John Henry says the subject is aimed at those who spread hatred and division or tear down others for their own benefit. That confrontational theme fits comfortably within a record that guitarist Mike Schleibaum characterizes as aggressive, dense and fueled by the band’s longstanding affection for melodic death metal.
Darkest Hour brought in Mark Lewis to produce, engineer and mix the album. Lewis has an extensive heavy-music résumé that includes work with Whitechapel, The Black Dahlia Murder and Cannibal Corpse.
The current Darkest Hour lineup features Henry on vocals, Schleibaum on rhythm guitar, Nico Santora on lead guitar, Aaron Deal on bass and Travis Orbin on drums.
Suffer Divine will feature 11 tracks in total, beginning with “All Cruelty Springs From Weakness.” Other cuts include “Gods of Decay,” “No Conquered Hearts,” “Salvation,” “Warrior,” “Vile Angel,” “The Unforgiving Hand,” “Tribalist” and “Everyday Horrors,” with “A Story of Redemption” closing the album.
Darkest Hour will take the new chapter onto the road in November. After a pair of headlining shows, the band is scheduled to join Fear Factory for a run of U.S. dates.
More than three decades after forming, Darkest Hour aren’t easing into veteran status quietly. Suffer Divine instead points toward another round of speed, melody and aggression from a band that still appears plenty interested in making some noise.
