Dana Carvey is back on “Saturday Night Live” with a fresh take on President Joe Biden. The comedian, 69, recently revealed on his “Superfly” podcast with David Spade that he’s been keeping the big news under wraps: his return to SNL aired on Sept. 28.
“It’s been top secret,” Carvey shared. “I’ve kept it quiet for weeks.”
Carvey made his Biden debut at the end of the cold open during SNL’s season premiere, where he appeared alongside Maya Rudolph as Vice President Kamala Harris at a fictional campaign rally. Carvey’s Biden humorously quipped, “A lot of people forget I’m president, including me,” while playfully engaging in banter with Rudolph’s Harris.
Carvey explained that SNL creator Lorne Michaels approached him to play Biden after he had developed the impression casually on his podcast. Noting the lack of a standout Biden impression, Carvey aimed to fill that gap. “I didn’t see it out there enough,” he said, adding that Biden is “trickier” to mimic compared to Donald Trump, whose impersonation has been helmed by James Austin Johnson.
Carvey, who famously impersonated President George H.W. Bush during his original run on “SNL” from 1986 to 1993, is bringing his signature humor to Biden, prioritizing laughs over political commentary.
