Dakota Johnson is soaking in the charm—and absinthe—of Karlovy Vary. The actress made her first appearance at the Czech film festival this week, promoting her latest films Materialists and Splitsville, both contemporary rom-coms with sharp insights into modern relationships.
While the picturesque spa town reminded her of “Disneyland,” Johnson admits sightseeing was limited thanks to the crowds. “So I went to the gym instead,” she joked, confessing that a tiny sip of the potent local absinthe left her nose burning.
Johnson, 35, is embracing her current fascination with love stories, describing them as “hopeful” and necessary in today’s world. Reflecting on Materialists, she says its central question—pursuing wealth and status versus authentic love—feels more relevant than ever.
Beyond acting, Johnson’s ambitions are growing. She confirmed plans to direct her first feature, a small, intimate project with actress Vanessa Burghardt. “I feel so protective of her—I can’t let anyone else do it,” she shared.
While theater and even music remain on her wish list, for now, Johnson is focused on love, storytelling, and the occasional book club—dog-chewed covers and all.
