In a heart-stopping finish Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts edged the Denver Broncos 29-28, thanks to a spectacular performance by rookie kicker Spencer Shrader – and a controversial late penalty.
Here’s how it played out: Shrader’s first attempt, a 60-yard field goal as time expired, fell short. But just as the Broncos were celebrating, a flag flew for a “leverage” penalty. Defensive lineman Dondrea Tillman was judged to have placed hands on a teammate (or opponent) to boost his jump in order to block the kick. That foul moved the ball 15 yards closer, securing another final play for the Colts.
Shrader stayed composed and drilled the 45-yard attempt cleanly. For the Colts, it was their first 2-0 start since 2009. Daniel Jones threw for 316 yards, while running back Jonathan Taylor piled up 165 yards rushing plus another 50 receiving, including a touchdown.
Broncos coach Sean Payton didn’t dispute the penalty after the game, though the verdict left fans debating whether it was the right call in a moment of high drama. Either way, it was enough to swing the game.
