A routine drill turned somber at Indianapolis Colts training camp Sunday as veteran running back Salvon Ahmed sustained a significant lower right leg injury following an illegal hip-drop tackle.
The injury occurred during a “live” developmental period — a rare full-contact session under head coach Shane Steichen. Ahmed broke free on a handoff before being dragged down at the goal line by undrafted rookie Trey Washington. The tackle, banned by the NFL due to its high injury risk, caused Ahmed’s right ankle to bend awkwardly, prompting immediate concern.
Trainers rushed to Ahmed, who was visibly in pain, and teammates joined safety Camryn Bynum in a circle for a prayer. Paramedics placed Ahmed on a stretcher and carted him off the field for hospital evaluation and X-rays.
“Never want to see that happen,” Steichen said post-practice. “We don’t coach those kinds of tackles.”
Though shaken, the Colts chose to finish the final 15 minutes of practice, including a key 2-minute drill. Linebacker Zaire Franklin, a close friend of Ahmed’s, emphasized the need to push forward: “We’re trying to be the best team we can be.”
Ahmed, previously with the Dolphins, signed with the Colts this offseason.
