August is Clear The Shelters Month, an annual, nationwide pet adoption campaign. Since 2015, Clear the Shelters has helped more than 860,000 pets find new homes.
If you’re ready to adopt, the first thing you need to do is check out these Pet Adoption Tips from Hill’s Science Diet. And then, do an online search for a participating shelter in your area.
If you’re not looking to adopt a pet this year, there are still a number of ways you can help out the cause, and your local shelter.
Donate
Call your local shelter to find out how to donate. Short on cash? Many could use linens, food, and other supplies – call and ask how you can help. You can also check out GreaterGood.org to help you donate to the shelter of your choice or to a larger fund for shelters in the future. Either way, you can be sure your money is making a difference.
Volunteer
Whether it’s walking dogs, taking pictures of new shelter animals or simply helping with laundry, every little bit counts at your local shelter. Call ahead and ask what will help the most!
Foster
Fostering a dog or cat helps shelters save space while socializing a pet. Look out — you may get attached to your new friend! Luckily, there’s also pet adoption.
