Christopher Nolan Makes Cinematic History With All-IMAX Adaptation of The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan is taking moviegoing to mythic new heights. His next project, a bold adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, will become the first feature film shot entirely with newly engineered IMAX cameras — a technical milestone that further cements Nolan’s reputation as one of cinema’s most ambitious auteurs.

IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond confirmed the groundbreaking move during the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, revealing that Nolan personally pushed the company to innovate. “Chris called me up and said, ‘If you can solve the problems, I’ll shoot The Odyssey 100 percent in IMAX,’” Gelfond explained. The result: lighter, quieter cameras designed specifically for Nolan’s vision.

Starring Matt Damon as the legendary Odysseus, the epic boasts a stacked cast including Zendaya, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron. First-look images have already teased Damon’s gritty transformation, and filming is underway in Italy.

Set for release on July 17, 2026, The Odyssey is poised to become a defining moment in cinematic spectacle. With Nolan behind the lens and mythology at the core, audiences can expect a visual odyssey worthy of its name — and a theatrical experience unmatched in scale or ambition.
