The action begins with this week’s Genesis Scottish Open and the ISCO Championship in Kentucky, followed by The Open Championship in Scotland and the Barracuda Championship in California. Each tournament will feature 156 golfers vying for victory, with detailed Power Rankings adding to the excitement.
The Renaissance Club in Scotland hosts the Genesis Scottish Open for the sixth consecutive year, with the last three years being PGA TOUR-sanctioned. This course, with its par 70 layout featuring five par 3s and three par 5s, spans 7,237 yards and offers a unique challenge. Unlike many courses, The Renaissance Club doesn’t rely heavily on detailed data analysis. Instead, it emphasizes imagination and strategy on its links-style layout.
Last year, the course presented golfers with a test of their short game, yielding the longest proximity to the hole on the PGA TOUR at 44 feet, four inches. Consequently, it also had the shortest average distance of putts converted at 61 feet, one inch. The course’s challenge was evident as Rory McIlroy won with a score of 15-under 265.
Interestingly, wind, a common factor in Scottish golf, is not expected to play a significant role this week. This anomaly means hole locations will be the primary defense for par, potentially offering more scoring opportunities than usual.
For the 83 golfers in the field who are already exempt for next week’s Open Championship at Royal Troon, the Genesis Scottish Open serves as an essential tune-up. The top three finishers not already exempt will secure the final spots for The Open, adding extra motivation for the competitors.
