Chris Evans Returns to the MCU in “Avengers: Doomsday”

Chris Evans is making his way back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday”, slated for release on May 1, 2026. While details about Evans’ role remain under wraps, this highly anticipated sequel will also star Robert Downey Jr., who is taking on the role of Doctor Doom, according to an exclusive report by The Wrap.

Evans’ MCU Comeback
Evans’ return to Marvel has been the subject of speculation for years following his farewell as Steve Rogers/Captain America in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” His character was last seen as an elderly version of Steve, passing the mantle of Captain America to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.

Earlier this year, Evans delighted fans with a surprise MCU cameo in “Deadpool and Wolverine,” reprising his role as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch from Fox’s Fantastic Four films. Whether his return in “Avengers: Doomsday” will involve Steve Rogers, Johnny Storm, or a multiverse variant remains a closely guarded secret.

Tony Stark and the Multiverse
Downey Jr.’s involvement as a Tony Stark variant suggests “Avengers: Doomsday” will dive deeper into the multiverse, continuing themes explored in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Loki.” The Russo Brothers, known for their work on “Captain America: Civil War”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, and “Avengers: Endgame”, are set to direct both “Doomsday” and its sequel, “Avengers: Secret Wars.”

The MCU Moving Forward
Evans’ return comes as the MCU evolves with a new generation of heroes. Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson is the current Captain America, with his next appearance set for “Captain America: Brave New World,” opening on February 14, 2025, alongside Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.

Chris Evans Beyond the MCU
Outside of Marvel, Evans has remained a prominent figure in Hollywood:

Starred in 2019’s “Knives Out” and the Apple TV+ limited series “Defending Jacob” (2020).
Voiced the titular character in Pixar’s “Lightyear” (2022).
Played the villainous Lloyd Hansen in “The Gray Man” (2022), directed by the Russo Brothers.
Recently appeared in “Pain Hustlers” (2023) with Emily Blunt and “Ghosted” (2023) with Ana de Armas.
Stars opposite Dwayne Johnson in Amazon MGM’s “Red One,” currently streaming.
What Fans Can Expect
The return of Evans and Downey Jr. alongside a multiverse storyline sets up “Avengers: Doomsday” to be a massive event. Fans eagerly await further details about Evans’ role and how his character will fit into the evolving MCU narrative.
