Chris Brown has filed a $500 million defamation lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery and Ample Entertainment, alleging they knowingly included false and defamatory claims in their documentary Chris Brown: A History of Violence. The legal action, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, accuses the producers of prioritizing profits over journalistic integrity and causing significant harm to Brown’s reputation.
Key Allegations in the Lawsuit:
Defamation: The lawsuit claims the documentary falsely portrays Brown as a “serial rapist and sexual abuser,” despite the lack of any conviction for sex-related crimes.
Unreliable Sources: Brown’s legal team argues that the documentary relied on discredited claims, including those made by a Jane Doe who accused him of drugging and assaulting her at a 2020 yacht party hosted by Sean “Diddy” Combs. The lawsuit notes that her previous civil case was dismissed after her attorneys withdrew.
Ignored Evidence: Warner Bros. and Ample are accused of disregarding evidence that disproved Doe’s allegations. Brown’s attorneys highlight Doe’s alleged history of violent and erratic behavior, including a restraining order issued against her by an ex-boyfriend.
Brown’s Statement:
“This case is about protecting the truth,” said Brown’s lawyer, Levi McCathern. “Despite being provided with evidence disproving their claims, the producers of this documentary intentionally promoted false and defamatory information, knowingly disregarding their ethical obligations as journalists.”
Documentary Details:
Released in October 2024, Chris Brown: A History of Violence chronicled Brown’s past legal issues, including high-profile incidents of violence and allegations of misconduct. The lawsuit contends that the documentary unfairly framed Brown as guilty of actions that were never substantiated.
Other Legal Issues:
Previous Lawsuits: The Jane Doe named in this case also accused Brown in 2022, but her claims were dismissed.
New Claims: Brown was also named in a separate lawsuit alleging he and his entourage assaulted concertgoers and a security guard at a Fort Worth, Texas, event in July 2024.
Warner Bros. Response Pending:
Warner Bros. Discovery and Ample Entertainment have yet to publicly respond to the lawsuit.
