If it feels like everything you eat in 2025 is suddenly being measured in grams of protein, you’re not imagining it. It feels like Americans are living in a protein-palooza, where smoothies, salads, desserts, and even beverages are all fighting to be the most functional thing you consume that day. It was only a matter of time before a major fast-casual chain leaned all the way in.
As Delish reports, as of December 23, Chipotle is launching first-ever High-Protein Menu, a curated lineup of entrees and snacks ranging from 15 to a very aggressive 81 grams of protein. The headline item, though, is something that sounds almost fake: the High-Protein Cup. It’s exactly what it sounds like—a four-ounce cup of Adobo Chicken (or steak), clocking in at 32 grams of protein, designed to be eaten as a standalone snack or added onto an order. No rice. No beans. No salsa. Just…meat.
On one hand, this feels like the most honest protein offering you could want. Chipotle isn’t trying to convince anyone that a flavored beverage or a sprinkle of collagen is going to change their life. This is protein in its most literal form, built from something people already order and trust. On the other hand, calling something a “snack” when it’s essentially a warm cup of chicken is a little weird.
Beyond the protein cup, the menu includes heavier hitters like the Double High-Protein Bowl and Double High-Protein Burrito, both hovering around 80 grams of protein and clearly aimed at gym regulars, athletes, and anyone in a bulking phase. There are also more balanced options, like a high-protein, high-fiber bowl and a lower-calorie salad, which feel like Chipotle’s nod to the GLP-1 crowd and anyone trying to hit macros without committing to a full brick of food.
What makes this launch notable isn’t just the numbers, it’s the timing. Protein has been the dominant food trend for years, but it’s only gotten louder with the rise of macro tracking, Ozempic-induced eating habits, and a general obsession with optimization. People don’t want new foods; they want more protein added to foods they already eat. Chipotle gets that. Instead of reinventing itself, it’s repackaging existing ingredients into formats that reflect how people are already ordering.
That’s especially clear with the High-Protein Cup, which is basically an official endorsement of a long-standing Chipotle “hack.” Fans have been ordering sides of meat forever. Chipotle just decided to formalize it, give it a name, and put it on a menu.
Whether this menu feels exciting or excessive probably depends on where you fall on the protein spectrum. If you’re the type of person who gets excited seeing “106g protein” on a Sweetgreen bowl or tracks every macro in an app, this is going to feel like a gift. If not, the idea of paying for a cup of meat might feel like a bridge too far.
Either way, one thing is clear: the protein craze isn’t slowing down anytime soon. And Chipotle’s latest move proves that in 2026, protein isn’t just a nutrient—it’s the main character.
