The Kansas City Chiefs have bolstered their quarterback depth by signing veteran Gardner Minshew to a one-year contract, positioning him as the primary backup to star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Minshew, 28, began his NFL career with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019, quickly earning recognition for his dynamic play and charismatic personality. Over six seasons, he has accumulated 11,950 passing yards, 68 touchdowns, and 34 interceptions across stints with the Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, and Las Vegas Raiders.
In 2024, Minshew signed a two-year, $25 million contract with the Raiders, aiming to secure the starting quarterback position. He started nine games, throwing for 2,013 yards, nine touchdowns, and ten interceptions before a collarbone injury in Week 12 ended his season. Subsequently, the Raiders released him with a failed physical designation.
With Mahomes’ durability and consistent performance, Minshew’s role is expected to be primarily supportive. Historically, Chiefs backups have seen limited action; for instance, Carson Wentz appeared in three games during the 2024 season, starting only once.
The Chiefs’ decision to sign Minshew reflects a strategic move to ensure experienced coverage in the quarterback position. Minshew’s familiarity with the AFC West, having played with the Raiders, adds value to his role as a backup.
By securing Minshew, the Chiefs have reinforced their quarterback lineup, ensuring that a seasoned player is ready to step in if necessary, thereby maintaining the team’s competitive edge in the upcoming season.
